Asbestos Management

Asbestos is a highly heat-resistant silicate mineral composed of flexible fibers that are resistant to heat, electricity and corrosion, it is used in the production of many building materials hence most buildings have (ACM) asbestos containing material. However, AFEK understands that the presence of ACM does not necessarily pose a threat to the occupant of that building until the asbestos is disturbed and becomes airborne. Hence AFEK’s processes to ensure cost effectiveness before commencing asbestos removal if need be, AFEK conducts asbestos testing on suspected areas to minimize cost.

AFEK’s asbestos management process includes

INVESTIGATION

Investigation is conducted to figure areas where asbestos is present and to know if in good condition. Investigation may be exhaustive covering every part of a whole building, or focused on some particular areas perhaps a floor or a room. Once investigation is carried out and there are no asbestos or they are in a good condition we may conclude operations at this point, hence the importance of this process in ensuring cost effectiveness and overall success of asbestos management.

PLAN OF ACTION

A plan of action is mapped out from the results got at the investigation stage. The investigation report consists details of affected areas, the threat they pose, cost of maintenance and removal if need be. In cases where asbestos are to be maintained over a period of time an Operation and Maintenance program would be initiated to handle potential risks from the remaining asbestos in the facility.
